How does lens quality affect your reading?

Lens quality determines how clearly you can read and how long you can read without experiencing eye strain. Premium grade optical lenses are made from premium quality optical plastics that meet specific ophthalmic (ANSI) standards for materials and manufacturing. The range in quality of ophthalmic plastic lenses varies from low grade to premium grade and as you would expect visual clarity varies with quality levels. Premium grade optical lenses are subject to higher standards of quality control where it’s flawless clarity and uniform lens surfaces provide an unobstructed path for visual images to travel through your eyes to the part of your brain where vision takes place. Free of waves, imperfections and providing true visual clarity, premium quality optical lenses facilitate effortlessly clear reading.

More than ever before, our lives are centered around digital reading and eye health is partly dependent upon the quality of the lenses we look through. Inferior quality lenses impair reading often exacerbating eyestrain with long term effects compromising to overall eye health. Drug store readers may suffice for quick reads…a label, a menu…but when you need to read something for anything longer, choose our premium grade optical quality reading glasses for all day clear, comfortable and healthy reading.

What are Aspheric Lenses?

An aspheric lens has curves that gradually flatten as your eyes move away from the center of the lens. The result is a wider, undistorted field of view and a thinner, lighter lens with reduced magnification of your eyes.

Why is Cellulose Acetate called a natural plastic?

Cellulose Acetate is a natural plastic, which is manufactured from purified natural cellulose. Natural cellulose in the appropriate mix is derived from two basic sources, cotton linters and wood pulp. It is hypoallergenic and known for being strong, lightweight, and flexible. Cellulose acetate can also be made up in a wide range of colors and finishes.  For eyewear, cellulose acetate is used by forming layers of plastic into large blocks then carefully dividing it into individual parts, hand polishing and finally assembling them into a frame. Done properly, this is an extremely labor intensive process.

Are ready-made reading glasses suitable for high reading lens strengths?

Just a little information is needed for a better understanding as to why high lens powers are best filled in prescription eyewear.  P.D./pupillary distance is the measurement  your optician takes to make sure that the center of the lens, which is also the point where  you have the clearest vision, lines up with the center of your eye. It should be taken for your distance correction and separately for your reading correction since your eyes converge when you read. This simple  measurement is important and especially important as the lens strength increases. In ready-made reading glasses whose P.D. is pre-set, some people who need high lens strengths (above a 3.00) may feel uncomfortable reading. As your lens power increases, individual measurements are best followed. Ready-made readers will good for short reads but not for long periods of time.

Can I use Renee's Readers frames for my prescription from my eye doctor?

Renee's Readers are ophthalmic quality, which means that they are capable of going through the manufacturing process involved in inserting prescription lenses. Some frames may not be suitable for certain prescriptions. As a licensed optician, I can help you determine that- here's our contact info.

Do ready-made reading glasses correct for astigmatism?

Over the counter reading glasses do not correct for astigmatism but for many people they correct them quite well.  This is very subjective and is usually affected by how much astigmatism you have. Some people with lesser amounts of astigmatism may be unsatisfied with their vision, others may not. Anything above a 1.00 cylinder in your prescription would best be corrected by prescription reading glasses.  Over the counter readers will correct you, but for long periods of reading, prescription reading glasses will be most comfortable and give you the clearest vision.  BTW, this also goes for people who have considerably different corrections in each eye. We can fill your prescription in any of our Renee's Readers styles- get more info here.

How good is the quality of Renee's Readers if they are made in China?

With most of today’s eyewear, being made in China, it has become the go to place for manufacturing eyewear.  Eager to advance themselves, the Chinese have developed their expertise and proved themselves very capable of delivering high quality eyewear. It is through the collaboration of experienced technicians and craftsman that I was able to create a high quality product at an affordable price. Renee's Readers are manufactured in the very same factories where many of today’s high priced designer brands are made.

How do I prevent my lenses from scratching?

The best way to prevent scratching is to put your glasses in its case when you are not wearing them or to place them with the lenses side up when you take them off. Cleaning them with the microfiber cloth also reduces scratches. The lenses in all of Renee's Readers are hard coated for scratch resistance with a hydrophobic coating to make cleaning easier. Read more care instructions here.
